This document describes agrifood trade patterns in the Andean Region. It reviews the multilateral trade negotiations conducted within the context of the FTAA and the World Trade Organization. The successul conclusion of the Eight Round of the GATT negotiations provided and impetus for policies aimed at promoting the participation of the economies of this region in international markets. As regards agriculture, the new trade agreements and commitments laid the groundwork for a number of reforms in agricultural trade, with the long-term objective of establishing and equitable, market-driven system. It analyzes the most important changes that are modififying the agribusiness environment in the andean countries, and the challenges these countries will face, for example, vis-á-vis the new agricultural trade negotiations, the organization of the agribusiness community, the need to comply with sanitary regulations and produce higher quality and safer foods, and technological innovation in both agriculture and agroindustry. The strategies developed to increase the competitiveness of products must recognize that markets today are much more diversified and sophisticated. In the coming years, agriculture will be affected by the globalization of the market; integrated into free-trade blocs (FTAA 205, integration agreements, etc); governed by 1rules of the game (regulations, procedures, standars) approved at the supranational level (WTO/GATT, FTAA, Codex Alimentarius - quality and safety of food -HACCP, International Office of Epizootics (OIE). International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC-FAO), ISO 9000 and ISO 14000; increasingly technical, with technological change being one of the imperative of competitiveness; faced with changing patterns of consumption that demand flexibility in production and technology linkages; and lastly and most importantly, committed to the consumer and to quality
